Gum disease is one of the top causes of tooth loss in older adults. Many adults will experience some form of gum disease at some point in their lives, even though this is an easily preventable malady for most people. Diagnosis of the disease and treatment can keep you from losing teeth if it is caught and stopped in time. Treatment consists of thoroughly cleaning the teeth by removing all plaque and tartar with special instruments. Depending on the extent of the disease, antibiotics may be administered. In some instances, they are put in the gums, and some patients may need to take them orally.
Gum disease begins quietly and if not addressed, can lead to serious oral health issues. If your gums look swollen or puffy, if they are bright pink or red and if they bleed when you brush or floss, it is important that you have them examined right away for gum disease. The earlier this disease is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome.
