What Happens During a Dental Exam?

If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, you might not remember what goes into a dental examination. There’s no reason to dread the experience – at Caribbean Dental, we use state-of-the-art technology to make sure you will be as comfortable as possible during your visit. Here’s some information on what you can expect when you come in for an exam.

What to Expect

Your dentist or hygienist will check your mouth to gauge your overall oral health. They will, for example, look for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease. You’ll probably be asked to bite down on a specially made piece of paper so your dentist can evaluate the alignment of your jaw.

The dentist will also ask whether or not you have any health issues, or whether you’re taking any medications. If you are, the two of you will then talk about how those medications might affect your oral health.

Your dentist might also suggest an x-ray to get detailed images of your teeth and the rest of your mouth. These images will alert your dentist to any potential issues that weren’t visible during the other parts of the exam. If needed, a hygienist may clean your teeth as well.

Why You Need Regular Dental Exams

Getting a dental checkup at least every six months is not only necessary for your oral health, but your overall health as well. Symptoms of some diseases will sometimes appear in the mouth before they show up anywhere else. If your dentist spots these symptoms, he or she will tell you so they can be addressed by your family doctor.
